as chicks get bigger they have less space. victorian legislature allows 40 000 birds in a single shed. large volumes such as these prevent birds from establishing their natural social orders


as depopulation approaches the birds are so crowded in that they can barely move.
nowhere to find respite from the noise or stench of ammonia


inside the shed the smell was overwhelming and the sound of machinery was relentless and loud. the birds were approximately five weeks old and their bodies densely covered the floor. these young birds already had no room to move with three weeks left inside this shed.


shed 1 at parkhurst farms. there are four tunnel ventilated sheds in production at the property each holding 40,000 birds. tunnel ventilated sheds allow growers to increase stocking densities by 5-15% over naturally ventilated sheds, aggravating already overcrowded conditions for the birds.


the air inside the shed is putrid and filled with dust particles. dead bodies are left to decompose amongst the living.
