Rescue 08: Parkhurst Farm (Shed 1): 11 birds removed
july 4, 2004

The rescue team of three members spent an hour inside the shed from 8:00 to 9:00 pm. We estimated the birds to be around ten days old. This was the first rescue of this batch (note: this was the fourth batch of birds we have witnessed during this investigation). We continued to visit this shed on a weekly basis to document on-going conditions, up to and including the depopulation which occurred on August 15.

The conditions found in the shed were very bad; we witnessed over 15 dead chicks and numerous sick and injured ones. Of the 11 rescued, many were near death and unable to reach food or water. Five chicks died within half an hour of removal from the shed, and five others in the next few hours, despite hot water bottles and individual attention. The surviving chick was frail and received around the clock care. She survived.
